Terms of reference The Authority is now a coast protection authority as defined by the Coast Protection Act, 1949. This enables the Council to take action with respect to the erosion and encroachment by the sea as necessary for the protection of any land in its area. The scope of activity included within funds available are:-
  • the maintenance of existing defences;
  • the construction and improvement of coast protection measures;
  • the statutory administration and enforcement functions bestowed upon the Borough as a coast protection authority;
  • Coastal Countryside Management.
Membership The Authority has elected members.
Geographical Area The coastal boundary of the district comprises the length of Southampton Water from Weston Sailing Club to the River Hamble and the western bank of the Hamble from Hamble Point to Bursledon railway bridge.

Relevant projects/initiatives Some sea defence work at Netley has been undertaken and works are planned at Hamble Common and Netley Cliff.
