Ecological enhancement is still in its infancy, pilot schemes are often covered by a scientific exemption so have been installed without formal consent. This situation will change as they become more common place and larger scale. On this page we will begin to develop some guidance on what consents and licences may be required.
Small scale enhancements do not usually require planning permission, the test for whether they would depends on how large the enhancement infrastructure was and how many devices would be installed. Currently local authorities would revert to the typical guidance for ecology that applies to a planning proposal.
If the enhancement is proposed as part and parcel of a development scheme, then it would simply form part of the overall proposals. Local authories generally support their use in proposed development.
