AbstractThe density of shipwreck sites within the Solent and the English Channel demonstrates the importance of the region for maritime trade, transport, warfare and defence. From prehistoric times the Solent has been a significant waterway which has benefited from the shelter afforded by the Isle of Wight; consequently the remains of ships, their cargoes and associated anchorage debris make this area significant for maritime archaeology. This is reflected in the number of Designated Historic Wreck sites within the region, in addition to the vast number of other shipwrecks, each with their own important story.
