Coastal Databases
The Solent Forum has also identified the following national and international databases, they are listed in alphabetical order:
| The Green Blue Science Matters Database | The Green Blue has an active research programme, which informs and underpins its work in other areas. The first phase has resulted in a major report 'The Environmental Interactions of Recreational Boating' together with a comprehensive database of scientific papers and the launch of our student research programme |
| British Geological Survey (BGS) discovery metadata base | This metadata base describes the datasets held by the BGS. The BGS is a member of the National Geospatial Data Framework (NGDF) and their discovery metadata complies with the NDGF standard. |
| British Oceanography Data Centre's (BODC) | Is a range of inventories and catalogues of holdings which are available on line and include: Current meter inventories (national and international) European Directory of Marine Environmental Data (EDMED) GLOSS station handbook NERC Metadata Gateway UK Tidal Gauage Network The Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level this is hosted by the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory (POL). The PSMSL was established in 1933, and is the global data bank for long term sea level change information from tide gauges. UK Cruise Inventory Wave data Inventory |
| British Ocean Sediment Code Repository | The BOSCOR repository currently holds over 800 sediment cores, although exclusive data is held on over 1300 seafloor sampling stations (July 2002). It holds extensive material from the NE Altlantic Ocean and also important collections from the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. |
| Channel Coastal Observatory | is the data management and regional coordination centre for the Southeast Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme |
| CEFAS | Reports published by Cefas are obtainable from the Cefas Library using the on-line order form, recent reports are also downloadable in Adobe .pdf format. |
| CuRLew (Chichester Harbour Resource Library) | Chichester Harbour Conservancy maintains a library of research reports and other documents relevant to its work. It is based at the Harbour Office, Itchenor and items can be studied there by prior arrangement. CuRLew offers an opportunity to access an extensive database of information about the harbour. |
| Defra and EA Research and Development projects database | Defra and the Environment Agency (EA) sponsor strategic research into flood management as part of a user-oriented Joint Programme of Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management. The Joint Programme aims to help inform policy development and ensure that flood and coastal erosion risk management measures are delivered in a technically and environmentally sound and cost-effective manner. Outputs from the research take the form of research reports and papers to conferences, seminars and scientific journals. Copies of the reports published since mid 2002 are available (in pdf format) via the Project info and publications link. |
| Dorest Marine Literature Database | This has been established to enable easier access to information on Dorset's marine environment. It provides references to the different marine reports (both published and unpublished), books and journals. It also indicates were the documents are held. |
| Dorset Coastal Digital Archive | This has been developed by Bournemouth University in association with local authorities. It's an archive of over 20,000 images reflecting the cultural heritage, natural environment and local histories of Dorset. |
| European Sea Sediments Meta Database | This service is a joint initiative by the EC-MAST supported projects - EUROCORE and EUMARSIN - to establish and maintain a searchable Internet metadatabase of seabed samples from the ocean basins and European continental waters, held at European institutions, universities, marine stations and industrial companies. |
| Euopean Spatial Planning Research and Information Database | ESPRID is a web-based Information Source for researchers and policy-makers concerned with Strategic Spatial Planning in a European context. It contains material from academic books and journals, policy reports, plans and policy statements, databases and websites. It also includes information on relevant experts. It has been designed to be particularly helpful to those involved in INTERREG programmes and ESPON 2006, and to those developing spatial strategies across Europe. |
| GIgateway | This site provides a gateway to UK geographic information |
| MAGIC | MAGIC is the first web-based interactive map to bring together geographic information on key environmental schemes and designations in one place. MAGIC is a partnership project involving seven government organisations who have responsibilities for rural policy-making and management, and although it has been designed to meet the needs of the partner organisations, the facility is available to anyone over the Internet. |
| MarLIN | The Marine Life Information Network for Britain and Ireland. This is an initiative of the Marine Biological Association of the UK in collaboration with major holders and users of marine biological data. MarLINwill provide the most comprehensive and easily used source of information about marine habitats, communities and species around Britain and Ireland. It also includes information on reports which have been produced. |
| MarLIN BIOTIC | A new on-line searchable marine biological traits resource. BIOTIC is aimed primarily at marine benthic ecologists, although the site is accessible to a wide audience through its simple design, integral glossary and links to MarLIN species pages. The central part of BIOTIC is a biological traits database that currently contains biological traits information on almost 200 marine benthic species, with traits categories including ‘growth form’, ‘characteristic feeding method’ and ‘developmental mechanism’. Traits information is supported by a bibliography of literature from which the information was obtained. Users can browse the available species list using both a taxonomic tree and a simple species list divided by phylum. Tools have been developed that enable the user to submit a species list of their own (as an Excel sheet or comma separate list) and download the traits information from matching species contained in the BIOTIC database as a Comma Separated Value (CSV) file so that traits data may be linked to benthic survey data for concurrent taxonomic and functional analyses. |
| National Marine Monitoring Programme (NMMP) | This programme was initiated in the late 1980s to co-ordinate marine monitoring in the United Kingdom between a number of organisations. The NMMP aims to detect long-term trends in the quality of the marine environment, to ensure consistent standards in monitoring, to establish appropriate protective regulatory measures, to co-ordinate and optimise marine monitoring in the UK, and to provide a high quality key dataset for key variables. |
| OceanNET online data Catalogues | This website provides a series on online search interfaces for the various catalogues and inventories maintained by the UK Marine Environmental Data Network. |
| PORT - Premier portal of high-quality maritime resources on the Internet | This is the National Maritime Museum's subject gateway to maritime information from the Internet. Subject gateways provide access to searchable and browseable catalogues of Internet based resources, all of which have been quality controlled or assessed before inclusion on the site. Librarians at the National Maritime Museum are actively involved in cataloguing and recording quality controlled online resources for Port. |
