Type of organisation	A registered charity and a voluntary body (with supporting/co-ordinating staff). The Trust is also a company limited by guarantee.
Terms of reference	The Trust has no statutory functions. The main areas of work relevant to the Solent Forum are as follows:- Management of seven coastal nature reserves covering 2,744 acres. Substantial involvement with the planning system including the provision of advice and lobbying. Close working with local authorities, statutory bodies, industry and local people to provide information and advice on the conservation of wildlife. Educational work including running WATCH (the Wildlife Trusts’ young persons’ environment club); a major programme of lectures and outings for the general public; and substantial educational use of its own nature reserves.
Membership	The Trust has some 11,500 members. In addition, six Trust Area Groups cover the coast. Much of the Trust’s work on the Isle of Wight is undertaken through Wight Wildlife, a partnership between the Trust and the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society.

Relevant projects/initiatives	The Trust has set up a Marine Group of Marine Biologists to advise the Trust on: the development of its marine work and initiatives and to provide an expert input to enable the Trust to take full part in the Solent Forum. Wight Wildlife was formed in 1993 to combine the expertise of two of the Island's major conservation charities, the Isle of Wight Natural History Archaeological Society and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. In 2001, it welcomed the Wight Nature Fund into the partnership. By working in partnership and pooling resources, it aims to strengthen the wildlife conservation effort on the Island.
Affiliations	The Trust is part of a national organisation - The Wildlife Trusts. The Trust manages a survey team set up and run in partnership with a range of organisations, including Hampshire County Council, a number of District Councils, the Environment Agency, English Nature and others. The Trust works at various levels in projects or informally with a range of statutory and not-statutory organisations, including the County Council, District Councils, English Nature, RSPB, CPRE, Solent Protection Society and others to co-ordinate Conservation work.
