Note: The Royal Yachting Association, being the national body based in Hamble, is very interested and involved in the Solent due to its national importance for yachting. The RYA is kept informed with copies of the relevant papers and minutes of Forum meetings.

Terms of reference The co-ordinating organisation for the yacht/sailing clubs in the region and as a channel for communications with RYA headquarters.
Membership Approximately 150 yacht/sailing clubs and associations. Most clubs are a member of one or more of the local associations, namely Solent Cruising & Racing Association, Chichester Harbour Federation, Portsmouth & Langstone Sailing Association, Association of Hamble River Yacht Clubs, Southampton Water Sailing Association and Poole Yachting Association. These local associations nominate the members of the Regional Committee.

In addition, approximately 90 recognised teaching establishments, namely sailing schools and other training organisations, are based in or operated from Poole and the Solent, and the Regional Training Panel supervises their activities.

Geographical Area Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Chichester Harbour and S E Dorset. However, clubs in North Hampshire, sailing on lakes or rivers, have opted to be in the RYA Thames Valley Region. The RYA Southern Region is primarily the Solent with its harbours and rivers and the south coast of the Isle of Wight.

The RYA also publishes a quarterly RYA Magazine free to its Personal Members and affiliated organisations.
Relevant projects/initiatives The yacht/sailing clubs are involved in organising major racing events in the Solent and Christchurch Bay, as well as their own domestic racing programmes. Major events include: Cowes Week, Admiral’s Cup series, Round the Island Race, Lymington Cup, Off-shore Powerboat races, start and/or finish of events such as Round Britain and Round the World, Eurolymp Regatta, several championships - world, international and national, Chichester Harbour Federation Regatta Week.
Affiliations The RYA (and/or in some cases clubs or local associations) nominate members of Cowes Harbour Commissioners, Hamble River Management Sub-Committee, Lymington Harbour Commissioners, Chichester Harbour Conservancy Advisory Committee, Langstone Harbour Advisory Committee, Poole Harbour Commissioners, Solent Area Sailing Advisory Committee, Southampton Water Recreational Users Group, Hampshire Area Environmental Group.
